This set covers missile types, India's main missile programmes and key defence technology concepts such as stealth, hypersonic flight and the nuclear triad. UPSC tends to test the difference between categories and the purpose of each system rather than detailed specifications.
How to practise: read each question and tap the option you think is correct. You will see right away whether you got it, along with a short explanation, and your score is tracked at the bottom of the screen. This set has 15 questions.
Topics covered in this set
- Ballistic and cruise missiles

Quick revision notes
- Ballistic missiles are powered only in the boost phase, while cruise missiles are powered through most of their flight.
- IGMDP (1983, led by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam) produced Prithvi, Agni, Trishul, Akash and Nag.
- BrahMos is an India-Russia supersonic cruise missile named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers.
- Hypersonic means faster than Mach 5, and scramjets burn fuel in supersonic airflow.
- India's nuclear doctrine rests on credible minimum deterrence and no first use, with a triad of land, air and sea delivery.
- Mission Shakti (2019) was India's anti-satellite test, and Mission Divyastra (2024) tested Agni-5 with MIRV.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between subsonic, supersonic and hypersonic speeds?
Subsonic is below the speed of sound (Mach 1), supersonic is from Mach 1 to Mach 5, and hypersonic is above Mach 5. BrahMos is supersonic, while hypersonic glide vehicles go faster than Mach 5. Higher speed reduces the time defenders have to react.
Why does a nuclear triad matter for a no-first-use policy?
A no-first-use policy depends on being able to strike back after an attack. Submarines are hard to locate, so the sea leg ensures that some weapons survive a first strike. This makes the threat of retaliation credible.
What does fire-and-forget mean for a missile?
It means the missile guides itself to the target after launch, so the operator does not need to keep tracking the target. This lets the operator move to safety quickly. Nag is an Indian example.
