Quick revision notes
- Basic COCOMO organic: E = 2.4 (KLOC)^1.05 PM, D = 2.5 E^0.38 months.
- Semi-detached: a = 3.0, b = 1.12; embedded: a = 3.6, b = 1.20 (c = 2.5; d = 0.35 and 0.32).
- FP = UFP x (0.65 + 0.01 x sum of 14 GSC ratings).
- Risk exposure = probability of risk x loss if it occurs.
- Availability = MTTF / (MTTF + MTTR); MTBF = MTTF + MTTR.
- PERT expected time = (o + 4m + p) / 6.
- CMMI levels: 1 Initial, 2 Managed, 3 Defined, 4 Quantitatively Managed, 5 Optimizing.
- Maintenance: corrective (bugs), adaptive (environment), perfective (enhancements), preventive (future problems).
Frequently asked questions
What are the three modes of basic COCOMO?
Organic projects are small, with experienced teams and familiar problems. Semi-detached projects are of intermediate size and experience. Embedded projects have tight hardware, software or regulatory constraints and need the most effort for a given size.
Why are function points preferred over lines of code for early estimation?
Function points are based on the functionality visible to the user, such as inputs, outputs and files, so they can be counted from the requirements before any code exists and are independent of the programming language.
What is the difference between CMMI and ISO 9001?
CMMI is a staged maturity model for improving development processes, rating organisations from level 1 to 5. ISO 9001 is a general quality management system standard for any industry, and an organisation is either certified against it or not.
