Artificial Intelligence MCQs - Adversarial Search and Constraint Satisfaction (Set 4)

Artificial Intelligence MCQs - Adversarial Search and Constraint Satisfaction (Set 4) - CodingHumans

This set of Artificial Intelligence MCQs combines two classic exam topics: game playing and constraint satisfaction. You will evaluate minimax trees, trace alpha-beta pruning, reason about move ordering and chance nodes, and then move to CSPs with backtracking, MRV, degree and least-constraining-value heuristics, forward checking and AC-3 arc consistency. It is useful for GATE and UGC NET preparation, university semester exams and interviews that probe search-based problem solving.

How to practise: read each question and tap the option you think is correct. You will see right away whether you got it, along with a short explanation, and your score is tracked at the bottom of the screen. This set has 18 questions.

Quick revision notes

  • Minimax: MAX takes maximum, MIN takes minimum of children; time O(b^m), space O(bm).
  • Alpha = best value for MAX so far on path; beta = best for MIN; prune when alpha >= beta.
  • Alpha-beta with perfect ordering: O(b^(m/2)); root value is the same as minimax.
  • Expectiminimax adds chance nodes valued by expected value.
  • Variable ordering: MRV, then degree heuristic; value ordering: least-constraining value.
  • Forward checking prunes neighbours' domains; AC-3 enforces arc consistency in O(cd^3).
  • Tree-structured CSP solvable in O(nd^2).

Frequently asked questions

Why does move ordering matter in alpha-beta pruning?

Pruning happens when a good move is found early, so examining the strongest moves first produces cut-offs sooner. With perfect ordering the effective branching factor drops from b to about sqrt(b).

What is the difference between forward checking and arc consistency?

Forward checking only removes values from the domains of the neighbours of the variable just assigned. Arc consistency propagates further, repeatedly revising every arc until each value in each domain has a supporting value across every constraint.

Is a CSP solved once it is arc-consistent?

Not necessarily. Arc consistency can shrink domains or detect failure, but a problem can be arc-consistent and still have no solution, so search is usually still needed.
